Duties DUTY 1:
Performs mechanical engineering work in support of conventional projects or portions of larger projects and programs under the guidance of a senior engineerThe incumbent must apply judgment in the independent application of the professional methods and techniques previously learnedDraws upon well-established approaches, criteria and practices of the profession, and uses typical engineering calculations and considerations in making minor modificationsKnowledge of work processes, and the capability to apply standard general engineering practices, are required to directly apply varied rules, procedures and precedents to the assignmentsAs the widely recognized specialist within the designated functional mission area, incumbent is intimately familiar with major pioneering work both within and outside the Air Force and DoD including developments within the industryDUTY 2:
Plans and carries out the collection and analysis of information, data and standards used by the assigned organization to perform mechanical engineering tasksResearch problems and issues to identify cause and develops solutions which take into consideration the methods and techniques of various professional engineering disciplinesPlans work procedures and selects standard practices and data to be applied to work projects and identified problemsUses accepted engineering work processes to search for information to bear on a problem and recognizes situationsIncumbent is required to make independent decisions concerning technical matters involving conventional engineering practices and procedures for assigned tasksDUTY 3:
Carries out special projects designed to facilitate the full use of the intern's training and developmentSuch assignments include the development of written summaries and reports to be used by higher level engineers, contractors and/or customers; leading teams of co-workers in completion of a conventional project; serving as a team member on large, complex studies; etcUses a wide range of engineering manuals, standard publications and technical material to obtain information, analyze data and prepare reportsPresents briefings or presentations on findings, which may require gaining senior officials' acceptance of proposed solutionsParticipates in the collection and analysis of the information, data and standards used by the assigned organization to perform a variety of mechanical engineering assignmentsDUTY 4:

EngineeringTo be acceptable, the program must:
(1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2)include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics:
(a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronicsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
